Imposter syndrome is a common feeling that affects everyone. It is a feeling of inadequacy and self-doubt that arises when individuals believe that they do not belong in the achieving space they are in. You feel like an imposter who is pretending to be someone you’re not and are not capable enough to be where you are.
It is often described as a fear of being found out, where individuals fear that once their clients or colleagues discover their lack of experience or qualifications, they will be outed and never be able to work with them again. This fear creates a deep sense of shame around individuals and their businesses, making it challenging to move forward and achieve their goals.
This is normal. Many (if not all) successful people have experienced it on their way to success. Famous high achievers such as Michelle Obama, Robin Williams, and Albert Einstein have all experienced imposter syndrome, even when they were at the top of their game. This realization is powerful because it shows that individuals are not alone in feeling this way and that it is a common experience that affects many people
One of the best ways to overcome imposter syndrome is through action. It can be difficult to push through the feelings of self-doubt, but taking action anyway is a powerful way to combat those negative thoughts. The more actions individuals take, the more they will realize their own capabilities, and the less they will feel like an imposter.
One effective way to combat imposter syndrome is to train the brain to find evidence of your capabilities and successes. This involves collecting and organizing past experiences and accomplishments that prove your qualifications. This can be done by creating a mental filing cabinet of evidence that can be accessed when feelings of self-doubt arise.
For example, one individual who struggled with imposter syndrome as a coach was able to overcome these feelings by reflecting on the evidence of their coaching abilities. They had helped family members and friends start successful businesses, received certification in life purpose coaching, and provided valuable advice to others. By focusing on these past successes, they were able to combat imposter syndrome and gain confidence in their coaching abilities.
Your brain is an answer-producing machine, and by training it to find evidence of your capabilities and successes, you can reprogram your thinking patterns and combat imposter syndrome. This involves practicing positive self-talk and being kind to yourself, as well as surrounding yourself with supporters who can lift you up and provide encouragement when you’re feeling down.
