25. Journey of a Digital Nomad

Welcome to the digital nomad journey! In this episode, we’ll be exploring the various phases of the journey, from daydreaming about traveling and starting a business to succeeding and finding happiness on the road.

The digital nomad journey is a unique and exciting path that combines travel and work. It is a transformative experience that requires resilience, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks, but in exchange, it offers a sense of freedom, happiness, and fulfillment that is not found in a traditional 9-to-5 work life. It is a journey of self-discovery and personal growth that allows you to experience new cultures and work from anywhere in the world.

We’ve divided the journey into 4 phases, each with its own set of challenges and rewards. Each phase includes action items to help you progress through this journey and achieve your goals. 

1. Daydreaming

• Feeling discontent, unfulfilled, misaligned, or unhappy in your current life and desiring a change
• Wondering if it’s too late to start traveling and chasing your dreams
• Feeling FOMO and envious of others who are on the road and living life to the fullest
• “Pinterest shopping” for travel and a life of freedom
• Waiting for a sign that it’s time to make a change and start your journey.

Action Items

• Clarify your Purpose: Write down your WHY and identify your core motivation for embarking on a digital nomad journey and starting a business.
• Explore your Options: Create a comprehensive list of your skills and interests to determine the various online work options available to you.
• Determine your Path: Choose between becoming a remote worker, freelancer, or entrepreneur to align with your lifestyle goals.
• Define your Lifestyle: Determine the type of lifestyle you want to lead, whether it be traveling to new places frequently or relocating to a new country for an extended period.
• Dig Deep: Ask yourself “If I’m being honest with myself, what’s the #1 thing holding me back from this journey?”

2. Taking the Leap

• You’ve decided! You’ve made the decision to go for it and pursue digital nomadism
• You’re overcoming initial obstacles and challenges (ex. what will my family think? What am I gonna do with all my stuff? What do I do about taxes? Do I need a visa?)
• Gaining clarity on your business/freelance plan and income source
• Feeling unsure about the next steps, occasionally overwhelmed or discouraged
• Excited, yet navigating through trial and error with some limited success

Action Items

• Identify and Overcome Challenges: Make a list of the roadblocks in your way, then come up with potential solutions.
• Showcase Your Skills: Assemble a portfolio to demonstrate your expertise.
• Gain Valuable Experience: Start doing projects to get hands-on experience with your business to build your credibility and establish yourself as a trusted expert.
• By Word of Mouth: Expand your network and create a referral program to attract new business opportunities.

3. Business and Travel Take-Off

• Generating consistent income through your online business
• Experiencing growth in your business ventures and gaining business momentum
• Catering to a specific target audience (niched or niching down)
• Pursuing your travel dreams and visiting bucket-list destinations
• Building relationships and collaborations with other digital nomads
• Feeling confident and optimistic about your digital nomad journey

Action Items

• Develop an attractive lead magnet for email marketing
• Publish consistent, in-depth, long-form content
• Craft a unique and compelling signature offer
• Build a professional website
• Celebrate! Mark milestones and enjoy the journey!

4. Cruising Altitude

• Achieved success in your digital nomad journey
• Surrounded by strong and supportive relationships
• Enjoying a sense of happiness and freedom
• Earning and saving money consistently
• Unlimited travel opportunities with a flexible budget
• Continuing to grow your business and steadily increasing your income
• You’re having fun while doing it! 

Action Items

• Strive for balance (harmony) between work and personal life
• Continue serving your target clientele
• Mindset shift – Consider bringing on support in the form of an assistant or VA to handle tasks and increase efficiency.
• Stay organized and streamline processes: Implement systems and processes that help you stay on top of your workload and maintain efficiency.
• Learn and grow: continually invest in yourself and your business
• Reflect and celebrate successes: Take time to reflect on your accomplishments and celebrate your achievements.
